Gustav Klimt, Biography

Gustaf Klimt was certainly not an artist in the traditional mould. He was always a rule breaker and evolved new styles and ways of expressing himself through his work.

But despite almost constant criticism throughout much of his life, he kept true to his own way of working. He was one of the nearly most famous members of the Vienna Art Nouveau (Vienna Secession) movement.

Klimt was born in Vienna in 1862, the son of an engraver and showed artistic talent from a very early age. He was awarded a scholarship to the Vienna School of Applied Arts in 1876 at the age of 14. After graduating he started work, with his brother and a friend, decorating municipal buildings.

Decorating Public Buildings

The last public building that Klimt worked on was the Great Hall at the University of Vienna. This was for three large works including one named “philosophy”. This controversial work was exhibited in Paris at the Universal Exposition and won a gold medal.

The Vienna Secession

In 1897 Klimt was elected president of the newly formed Vienna Secession. The main focus of the Secessionists was to promote the advancement of new ways of artistic expression .The group also produced their own publication to further their aims.

Despite being known mainly as a painter, Klimt rarely produced traditional paintings. He preferred to work on other surfaces such as murals and he also designed many posters. Klimt and the secessionists were not always popular. The ruler of Austria, Emperor Franz Joseph even ordered that his car should avoid buildings that were decorated by Klimt and his group.

DEATH

The artist died in 1918 after suffering a stroke.

In November of 2003, Klimt's Landhaus am Attersee sold for $29,128,000.
