Almost Abstract
Painting Style of O'Keeffe
Georgia O’Keefe, was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin on November 15, 1887. She studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students' League in New York City.
Her landscapes and paintings of desert flowers, which are often interpreted as yonic symbols have taken on a visionary character. The style is
"almost abstract" paintings of flowers, are world famous
paintings.

EARLY
YEARS
She took a job teaching in Amarillo, Texas in 1914, and in 1916 took another teaching job in South Carolina.
While she was in South Carolina, a friend of hers showed some of her paintings to the photographer and art gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz, who was impressed by her work. After some negotiations, O'Keeffe allowed Stieglitz to exhibit her. Stieglitz was especially impressed with O'Keeffe's paintings of landscapes in the American West. Stieglitz lived with O'Keeffe for a while when she returned to New York City, but O'Keeffe wanted to move west, and Stieglitz was uncomfortable with travel.

NEW
MEXICO
In 1929, after a successful decade in New York, O'Keeffe discovered what she felt to be the perfect landscape for her: New Mexico. Here she began to paint her great mythical images of nature, uninhabited by humans.
She divided, for years,
her time between
New Mexico and New York, where Stiglitz exhibited what
she had produced each year and marketed her works.
She moved after his death to Abiqiui permanently, a
remote village in New Mexico where she had bought an old
farmhouse. She was fascinated by the barrenness and
expanse of this unspoiled landscape, which she painted
often until the end of her life.

Georgia O'Keeffe Museum
The museum in Santa Fe, New
Mexico, in 1997, The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum houses the
first collection of works devoted to an American woman
painter.
Included is a special photography
section with pictures of O'Keeffe, some taken by her
husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz, at different
times in her long life. Outstanding color reproductions of 86 of the
artist's works, several of which are double-spread
gatefolds, distinguish this volume, which features
essays by four art historians on O'Keeffe's significance
to the art world.
