Ballet History

The first Ballet Dances were performed by the Nobility at the Renaissance Courts of Italy, with a mix of “social dances” together with songs, moves and verses. 

The technical of Ballet highly developed during the 18Th Century period becoming a very dramatic art form.

 During the 19Th Century, Marie Tanglioni shaped new techniques as the “Pointe Work” that finally molded The Ballerina as the ideal figure in scene. Marie Taglioni who danced the full length of the La Sylphide en pointe in 1832. 

The Opera and The Ballet revived after the WWII by the Russian Companies, which started worldwide tours embracing the entertainment to the masses.

There are several acknowledged methods of Ballet:

English Ballet – Royal Academy of Dance

Italian Ballet – Cecchetti

Russian Ballet – Vaganova

Danish – Bournonville

American - Balanchine

Ballet dance technique

En pointe - Ballet position
Dancing en pointe is the action of rising to 'tips of the toes' while performing steps from ballet technique. Also known as pointe work, it is mostly performed using hard toed pointe shoes but can be performed using soft toed ballet shoes. 

Pas de deux - Ballet position
Ballet pas de deux (step / dance for two) is a duet in which ballet steps are performed together. Grand pas de deux refers to a duet in which a male and female dancer perform together and features supported leaps, lifts, and pirouettes. pas de trois are trios and pas de quatre quartets.

Ballet Terms - Ballerina

Although the term ballerina is used for any female ballet dancer it was originally a rank given to an exceptional ballet soloist in the Russian Imperial ballet companies. The rankings, from highest to lowest, were:

Ballet Prima ballerina assoluta
Ballet prima ballerina
Ballet ballerina
Ballet premieres danseur
Ballet soloist
Ballet coryphee
Ballet corps de ballet

Famous Ballet Companies

The Moscow Theater is the home of most renowned Ballet Companies: The Bolshoi Ballet, where famous ballet dancers had performed: Anna Pavlova, Rudolf Nureyev and Natalia Makarova.  The Bolshoi Ballet is Opening the 228th season during 2005 with the play "Sleeping Beauty", with the dancers Vladimir Malakhov and Diana Vishneva The New York City Ballet  is the oldest Ballet Company in United States, founded around 1938.
